Asian Buying
Trip
I leave on January
11 to Thailand and India for another round of buying. None of the
places I'll be visiting were affected by the recent tsunami, but
our hearts and prayers go out to those devastated by this tragedy.
One thing I'll
be focusing on is Bali-style jewelry with lots of detail and handwork.
One of our major Indian suppliers is producing a new range that
has strong Bali influences but incorporates the broader variety
of stones available in India. I have seen some samples and am very
excited about this new direction.
We will be paring
back on our home accessories, eliminating the curtains and revamping
the pillows and cushions selection. Look for a fresh update of our
range of purses and scarves. We'll be working with a new supplier
for these items that looks very promising.
As always, please
email me with any requests.
I can't guarantee that I will find what you want, but I always give
it my best shot.
Fashion Forecast:
Turquoise and Coral Comeback
Three years
ago we couldn't get enough of it. The trend went on and on, then finally
faded away. Not since the 70's had turquoise been so popular, and
now it is poised to make a comeback. The trend this time around though
is a bit different. Instead of big and chunky with Native American
themes, we are looking for more ladylike designs with color playing
a more important role than texture.
And the trend
for turquoise
is not limited to jewelry. Accessories Magazine, in the November
2004 Spring Forecast, calls for turquoise to be a strong factor
throughout the accessories market, from footwear to hats and everywhere
in between. Their tagline "Poised for turquoise: turquoise
is back and this time it;s not just for jewelry" says it all.
Only slightly
less popular going forward is pink coral. Again, focus is more on
color than on texture. Peachy pink colors will be popular not only
in jewelry, but will overlap into the broader accessories market
in similar fashion to turquoise.
Trends will
be for more ladylike styles, with a 40's and 50's influence on femininity.
Pastel scarves, clutches with short wrist straps, bucket hats with
florals all make a comeback starting in Spring. For jewelry, look
for the aforementioned stones, along with pearls, charm
bracelets and cameo pins and earrings to be popular.
